Holiday highlights

Ljubljana

A city of only 280,000 people, Slovenia’s capital is easy to explore by foot, so you can take in its charming, leafy streets and historic buildings. The Ljubljanica River is the heart of the city, with beautiful bridges and trendy cafés sitting along its banks. Dominating the city’s skyline, a visit to Ljubljana Castle is a must for history buffs. Accessible by funicular from the Old Town, the castle now houses a museum, restaurant and gallery.

Portoroz

Portoroz, literally the ‘Port of Roses’, has been famed as a health resort since the 13th century when the Benedictine monks treated various diseases with sea water and salt mud. Today, this coastal town prides itself on its elegant hotels, restaurants, boutiques, sport centres and beautiful natural surroundings.

Slovenian Coast

Slovenia’s only coastline occupies a 46.6km stretch of the Istrian peninsula. Located between Italy and Croatia, this Mediterranean coast is home to several picturesque seaside towns. The largest of these is the port city of Koper, known for its medieval old town and Venetian-style landmarks. Arguably the most beautiful is Piran, a medieval walled town surrounded by sea.

Trieste

Located at the head of the Gulf of Trieste, Trieste has been influenced by Latin, Slavic, and Germanic cultures throughout its long history. The historic centre is characterised by broad streets as well as 18th century Baroque and 19th century Neoclassical architecture. During the 1850s Miramare Castle was built nearby for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg. The castle offers today's visitors an example of a luxurious aristocratic residence which has preserved its original furnishings.
