Holiday highlights

Schoenbrunn Palace

This baroque palace (1700) is one of Vienna's most popular attractions. It has 2000-rooms-worth of splendour (of which 40 can be visited), complete with a classically landscaped garden. Additional attractions include a maze and the world's oldest zoo.

Imperial Palace

Known as the Hofburg, the Imperial Palace is an enormous monument to Habsburg culture and heritage. The Habsburgs set up house here for more than six centuries, periodically adding new sections to the palace.

Ringstrasse

Emperor Franz Joseph ordered the demolition of the city walls 130 years ago. In their place the Ringstrasse was built, the showpiece of the monarchy, bordered by such important buildings as the State Opera, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Natural History, the Parliament, City Hall and Vienna University.

Christmas markets

The plaza in front of Vienna’s City Hall is transformed into a shopper’s playground. The city hall plaza isn’t the only market worth a visit: there’s a Christmas Village at Altes AKH, one on Spittelberg and many more. You’ll find lots of local objects: felt slippers made from wool off local sheep, schnapps distilled, hats knitted and typical food.
