Holiday highlights

Porto

Located on the Duoro River in Northern Portugal, Porto is one of Europe’s oldest cities, and was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1996. Lovers of the arts will be spoilt for choice in Porto. Visit the Rua Miguel Bombard, home to many of the city’s galleries and the Palacio da Bolsa do Porto (the stock exchange building) – one of the most attractive buildings in the city. Port wine is Porto’s most famous export. Typically a sweet red wine served after a meal, Port is also produced as a dry or a white wine. Your local guide will take you to one of the cellars of the city for a tutored Port tasting as part of your city tour. For panoramic views of the city and a great selection of bars and restaurants head across the Ponte Luis I to the romantic district of Vila Nova de Gaia.

Peso de Régua

Located in Vila Real, Peso de Régua is a municipality in northern Portugal and commonly referred to as Régua. Famous for its vineyards that grow in terraced lands along the Duoro River, this town was recognised as the International City of Vineyards and Wine in 1988. As the town is situated on the banks of the River Douro, we suggest taking a stroll along the river banks in your lesiure time and enjoying the scenic views on offer here.

Salamanca

Located in the neighbouring country of Spain, Salamanca is a medium size city in Spain which is best explored on foot. Getting lost in its ancient buildings or strolling through the streets, you will find a city with a rich past, and a vibrant cultural atmosphere. Salamanca is also a bustling city with lively cafés, terraces and bars, perfect for a relaxing afternoon in the sun. Most of the city centre is pedestrianised inviting visitors to walk around and discover the heart of the city. In the centre you will find a rich variety of museums, theatres, cinemas, shops, and restaurants. Highlights include a visit to the famous University of Salamanca, Plaza Mayor, the central square where people meet for a coffee or lunch in the sunny terraces.

Guimarães

Known as the ‘Cradle of the Portuguese Nation’, Guimarães is a historically significant city in the district of Braga, in Northern Portugal. The city has a beautifully preserved historic, medieval centre that is well worth exploring on foot. Get lost in the winding lanes and uncover the picturesque plazas that dot the city. Take in stunning views of the iconic 1,000 year old castle and the impressive palace built by the Duke of Bragança in the 15th century. In 2001, the historic town centre became listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for being an ‘exceptionally well-preserved and authentic example of the evolution of a medieval settlement into a modern town’. As well as an array of historical highlights, Guimarães also offers a great selection of cafés and restaurants where you can sit back and relax, admiring the beautiful architecture that surrounds you.
