Why the Camino should be your next adventure...

What is the Camino, you might ask yourself? Why should this walk be on my wish list? What is it that makes it so popular?

In official terms, the Camino de Santiago is a pilgrim walk to the shrine of the apostle of St. James the Great in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. In reality, it is so much more. It’s a social, cultural and scenic experience. Walking the Camino, you get a huge sense of accomplishment and comradery from the friends you meet along the way. There is a peacefulness to walking the Camino that can’t be fully described, only experienced.

The Camino has really grown in popularity within the Irish market in the last 10 years, and it’s easy to see why. As there are a number of different trails and routes to choose from, it is perfect for all levels of ability and you don’t need to be an expert walker to experience it. For those who want to have the experience but aren’t keen to be walking 20km+ per day, the Footsteps of the Camino is a great option, also offering the opportunity to visit the famous Guggenheim museum in Bilbao and a local winery in the Rioja region. For more experienced walkers, the Last 100km or Portuguese Coastal Way offer more of a challenge and allow you to earn an official “certificate”, also known as the Pilgrim’s Passport. The former takes you through woodlands, farmland and rustic hamlets, while the latter follows a beautiful coastal route to bring you to Santiago.

No matter which route you choose, you’ll regularly pass the Camino Shell, an iconic symbol of the Camino which is used to guide Pilgrims along the way to Santiago. There are many stories as to why the scallop shell is used. Some say it represents the sun. Others say that the shell represents the different routes you can take to get to the shrine of St. James.
