The raw natural beauty of Norway cannot be exaggerated; it truly is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places on earth.
Recently, some of the Travel Department team travelled to Norway to plan some exciting new itineraries for 2015.
We spent several days travelling through some of Norway’s most scenic locations including the world famous fjords. Created by glacial erosion, the fjords are popular with outdoor enthusiasts for kayaking, hiking, rafting and winter sports; they are also simply perfect to just to sit back and admire.
Norwegians are fiercely proud of their heritage and culture, during the trip we learnt a lot about the country’s history and folklore from our great guides. We visited several museums including the Viking Ship Museum and the Hanseatic Museum in Bergen. Throughout the country we saw incredibly well preserved stave churches that look like they belong in a fairy story and learnt about Scandinavian folklore, including trolls and other Norse mythology.
We took a cruise through the deep fjords to Flam, a picturesque village nestled between the steep cliffs in the innermost part of the Aurlandsfjord. As the boat travels through the narrow fjords you see cascading waterfalls, snow-capped mountains and houses perched in the most precarious places that you wonder how anyone manages to live there! The day was cold but the crisp air was so refreshing and the unspoilt landscape is mesmerising.
We also took a trip on The Flam Railway, one of the world’s most beautiful and steepest normal-gauge railway lines. Along the way we experienced some of the best scenery of all. The journey took us from sea level up the steep mountainside to over 1000m above the sea. This is understandably a highlight for many who travel to Norway with Travel Department and we try to include it in almost all of our itineraries.
Norway has a reputation for being one of the most expensive places to travel but I would recommend travelling at least once in your lifetime (although it’s hard not to be tempted back again). Travelling in a group with Travel Department definitely makes a visit a lot more affordable and we include all the highlights of this incredible country into our itineraries, along with guidance from local experts so you get the best experience possible.
We have fantastic trips to Norway departing in 2015. If you have any questions about Norway, our itineraries or would like to book, please call (01) 637 1600.
